In this work, we analyze the discourses around La plaza 9 de Julio in the city of Palpalá, Argentina, applied in the relationship between square and communication where these components respond to dynamics in tension. We study the discourses of the square, about the square and the alternative discourses that were given in relation to this public space. Statements originating from: the officiality of legislative or normative acts with respect to the city tracked in the compilation of legal sources were taken into account, the testimonies of the residents interviewed and surveyed who made use of said public space as well as those of municipal officials and, in addition, graffiti captured on the walls of the square was analyzed from the photographic records taken between 2015-2016. We were interested in understanding what they communicate to us, what is communicated in this space and how it affects the spatial-temporary structure of the city through various modes of use and appropriation of public space, given that it’s the place par excellence of enunciation, circulation and consumption of speeches. The study of this square and its social uses allowed us to reflect on how we organize our habitat and how we communicate daily in urban life. The square is a space for encounters but also for conflicts, a place where differences are expressed, where it is evident that there is a struggle in the right to say and create meanings between what is allowed, supported by specific groups, and what is not allowed.
