Abstract

The aim of the essay is to present how the German philosopher Theodor W. Adorno conceived the 20th-century social situation of music. To achieve this purpose, key concepts rooted in modern philosophical thought are analyzed. Greatly influenced by Walter Benjamin, each concept in Adorno is treated as a constellation, meaning an idea that must be developed. When interconnected with other concepts, these constellations provide a comprehensive understanding of the problem of the social situation of music. The essay is divided into two parts: the first focuses on the concept of ideology, and the second on reification. Each part is further subdivided to deepen the exploration of Adorno’s perspective on musical experience, ultimately emphasizing the importance of his aesthetic thought in relation to other authors who addressed similar issues.
